Castillo de San Marcos
Social Media Internship
“Through interpretation, understanding, through understanding, apperciation; through apperciation, protection.” Freeman Tilden.
During my time at the Castillo de San Marcos, I had the ability to explore many aspects of the history field and beyond. As I learned about the forts antiquity, I simultaneously helped create, reconstruct, and preserve it through media outlets. Public history has gone digital with the ability to broadcast whereabouts about the Castillo de San Marcos. Part of Castillo de San Marcos' mission statement is to provide visitors with an inspirational experience. Instantly, the experience can leave with the visitors and continue to be recreated for them when they follow the fort on social media platforms. While this provides the National Park Service with the ability to obtain more visitors, it also makes visitors feel part of something bigger when interacting on these platforms. The core values of the Park Services include shared stewardship, excellence, integrity, tradition, and respect. Throughout my entire experience at the Castillo de San Marcos, I can say that these values were apparent and my values were heightened because of the experience of working with a fortification that has stood the test of time. Within the idea of blending social media and interpretation is the core value of keeping the Castillo de San Marcos well taken care of for years to come.
